WHAT IS CARBON TRADING?

When we use our household whitegoods, computers and electrical equipment, drive our cars, fly somewhere, do anything which requires the use of energy, at the office, in the factory, or at the shops, this creates a carbon emission or greenhouse gas that will go into our planet's atmosphere.

Over the years all the emissions have built up in our atmosphere, and this has trapped the sun's energy, causing an increase of our planets temperature.

The increase in temperature is very dangerous, and scientists from the United Nations have predicted a rise in the planet's temperature of up to 2 degrees celsius, which is likely to cause sea levels to rise, and increased severe weather patterns.

This is a serious situation, as these changes will affect many precious eco systems, animals, communities and people around the world. Both Sir Nicholas Stern (The UK Stern Report) and Professor Ross Garnaut (Garnaut Cimate Change Review Australia) predict that the cost of doing nothing will be higher than the costs of doing something about it.

WHAT CAN WE DO? 

The energy you use creates emissions.

1. The first and best thing to do is to reduce your energy consumption, and buy only high energy efficient products.

2. Assess your energy consumption by doing a personal or business emissions audit. This is a process that Earth Institute can assist you with.

3. For the energy you do use, you can purchase carbon offsets from Earth Institute, or another reputable source of your choice. Earth Institute will invest the money from your purchase in green technologies, forestry, and green power, in essence to reduce as much as possible our impact on the planet's atmosphere. This is known as becoming CARBON NEUTRAL, which essentially is the process of buying an offset for the energy and emissions that you have created, thus producing a neutral condition. When you offset with Earth Institute you will receive an Earth Institute Carbon Offset Certificate that complies with regulatory standards.
